FISHING REPORT

This week’s fishing report, brought to you by the team at Tackle World Adelaide Metro.

METRO

Squid reports have been consistent from most spots along the Metro coast, boat and jetty anglers alike have been managing good catches fairly easily.

You only have to take a walk along Brighton Jetty to see how popular the humble Squid can be, with land based spots like Brighton, Marino Rocks, Port Noarlunga Jetty and Outer Harbor Breakwater all producing good numbers of Squid over the past week.

Boaties have found bag limits of Squid at Brighton, Marino, Hallett Cove, West Beach, Semaphore and Outer Harbor. Good quality Squid Jags and light Fluorocarbon leaders will enhance your chances.

King George Whiting are still being caught at Brighton and Hallett Cove, with depths of 4-5 metres ideal. Smaller fish can be found at Semaphore and Outer Harbor, with most fish needing to be measured.

Snapper have picked up along the southern Metro spots, with some good catches coming from inshore grounds from West Beach to Seaford. Better sized fish have come from those heading offshore towards Ardrossan and Tapley Shoal on the better tides.

Snook have been caught all along the Metro coast, with shallow areas from Somerton to Marino all holding schools of quite large fish.

Yellowfin Whiting are being found on the flats at Thompsons Beach and Pt Parham, with fresh worms and surface lures working very well.

Blue Swimmer Crabs are being caught from north of West Beach and through to Pt Gawler, with Wonga Shoal having better sizes.

The jetties are fishing well for good sized Blue Swimmer Crabs, but beware of the Seals that have taken up residence at each Metro Jetty.

Using a mesh bait bag with some fresh Flathead Heads will be the best bet for avoiding the Seals taking the baits, as the Seals don’t seem to like the Flathead compared to other baits.

Rakers are doing well at Thompsons Beach and Pt Parham, with some big males making up some quick bag limits.

YORKE PENINSULA

King George Whiting are still around in pretty good numbers at Port Hughes, with catches of fish to 45cm coming from inshore grounds close to Cape Elizabeth.

Other King George Whiting catches have come from Pt Victoria, Stansbury and Marion Bay.

Garfish are biting well at Tiparra Lighthouse, Moonta Bay, Edithburgh and Pt Broughton. Other spots have been producing fish but they have been quite shy. Try using very small hooks such as ultra-fine fly fishing hooks with very small baits when they are not actively feeding.

Snapper have been coming from Tapley Shoals, with some good sized fish to 10kg coming from the Marion Reef area also.

Corny Point and Wallaroo have also produced good catches, with boats fishing beyond the Steamer channel at Port Hughes returning with a few nice catches of Rugger sized fish.

Squid have been coming from most Jetties up and down the Yorke Peninsula, with Port Hughes, Wool Bay and Marion Bay all fishing well.

Those fishing from boats have been doing very well on the squid at Stansbury, with plenty of good sized Squid coming from the broken bottom south of The Spit.

Port Hughes, Wallaroo, Ardrossan and Port Victoria have all been producing plenty of Squid for those fishing from boats and kayaks.

EYRE PENINSULA

Pt Augusta has had a few Kingfish caught recently, but some patience is needed when works are undertaken on the nearby power lines which is restricting some access at times.

Large Blue Swimmer Crabs are also coming from Pt Augusta, with Whyalla also having some good sized crabs caught from the Jetty and boats.

King George Whiting have come from inside Coffin Bay, with land based catches coming from the Ledges and near the boat ramp.

Better sized King George Whiting have come from the Sir Joseph Banks Group and Arno Bay.

Salmon have been biting well at Gunyah Beach and Sheringa, with some fish to around 4-5 kg coming from Almonta.

Squid are being found throughout the bays at Port Lincoln, with the town jetties fishing well early morning.

Garfish are schooling up at Coffin Bay and Whyalla, with good catches coming quite easily at both locations.

FLEURIEU PENINSULA

Squid have been caught in good numbers from boats fishing from Wirrina Cove, with Second Valley, Rapid Bay and The Bluff all producing good sized Squid.

Salmon Trout up to about 1lb have been caught on the inside of the Murray Mouth at Goolwa, with Sugars Beach the easiest to access without a four wheel drive.

Goolwa Beach has had a few Sharks and Salmon at night, with small Salmon also coming from the Murray Mouth.

Snapper catches have come from offshore of Wirrina Cove and also some good hauls of fish around 50-60cm coming from Backstairs Passage for Cape Jervis launchers.

Mulloway have been hit or miss in the Coorong, with the odd school encountered with fish to around 80cm caught recently on baits and soft plastics.

SOUTH EAST

Salt Creek has started to fish well for Mulloway to around the metre mark, with a couple slightly bigger fish coming from the surf over the past few weeks.

There are still plenty of big Salmon also coming from Salt Creek, along with plenty of Gummy Sharks.

Other good surf Gummy Sharks have come from Browns Bay and Danger Point.

Port MacDonnell has been fishing well for offshore anglers over the last week, with good catches of Blue Eye Trevalla coming from the deeper waters of the Shelf.

Snapper have come from areas in around 100m of water, with some good Flathead also caught.

Large Garfish continue to fire at Livingstons Bay and Cape Douglas, with plenty of Squid also coming from the same areas.

RIVERLAND - FRESHWATER

Carp are now well and truly active in all parts of the River Murray, with backwaters teaming with big fish ready to start spawning.

Light lines, with small light weight float rigs are extremely effective at catching big Carp from shallow waters close to the banks and make for a lot of fun.

Callop have been coming from Cobdogla, Ramko, Cadell and Overland Corner. With Swan Reach and Purnong also fishing well in the Lower Murray.

Bassman Spinnerbaits and Rapala Deep Tail Dancers have all worked well recently for those casting lures around structure.

Shrimps are readily available along all of the river, and make the best bait to target native species.
