FISHING REPORT

This week’s fishing report, brought to you by the team at Tackle World Adelaide Metro.

Thursday -- 16th of August, 2018

METRO

The cold and windy conditions over the past week or so have made fishing difficult for some, but the brave have been rewarded with some great catches when they have managed to get out on the water.

We are enjoying a good local Salmon run, with consistent catches of fish to 2kg coming from most of the southern surf beaches over the last two weeks.

Port Noarlunga Jetty has been typically good on or around the storms, with large schools of Salmon holding behind the reef and actively feeding on Pilchard and Whitebait as well as taking metal casting lures.

The nearby beaches have produced Salmon Trout to 1kg pretty well throughout the day, with larger fish biting best on the bigger afternoon high tides.

Other good catches of Salmon have been coming from Christies Beach, O’Sullivans Beach Breakwater and smaller Salmon Trout at St Kilda.

King George Whiting have been caught in good numbers across the Metro coast when conditions have been calm, with fish to 38cm coming from grounds north west of Outer Harbor, Semaphore Reef, Bower Road, Brighton and Moana.

Snapper have come from the inshore spots at Somerton and Hallett Cove after the blows, with a few smaller fish coming from the Seaford grounds.

Large Squid have been found at Brighton, Seacliff and Outer Harbor. The numbers have not been high but the size of most squid caught have been quite big and more than make up for the lower numbers.

Bream fisherman have been doing well in the Port Rivers North Arm creeks, with plenty of good sized fish also coming from the middle reaches of the Onkaparinga River.

Fly fisherman have been doing well using minnow pattern flies, while those using lures have done well on Zman Grubz in Motor Oil, or small hard body minnows.

Mulloway news has been quiet from the Port River, but some good School fish are coming from the Onkaparinga River in the late afternoon or early evening.

YORKE PENINSULA

Salmon have been in good numbers at Browns Beach and Berry Bay, with smaller fish to being found at Pondalowie Bay.

The fishing at Browns Beach has been quite spectacular at times when the schools of Salmon are holding behind the reef, with a fish a cast for those throwing lures.

King George Whiting have bitten well over the past few weeks for most Yorke Peninsula locations when crews have managed to get the boats on the water.

Port Hughes visitors scored bag limits on the inshore grounds within the bay, with tides being very important in this area make sure you are fishing the hour before high tide until an hour after for best results.

Balgowen, Wallaroo, Port Broughton and Price also reported good catches, with a few larger fish caught at Tapley Shoal.

Squid have come from Moonta Bay Jetty, Edithburg and Pt Julia where deeper water has worked best.

Snapper news remains quiet along most of the Yorke Peninsula, with only a few reports coming from Balgowen and Marion Bay.

Although more commonly found in summer months, Blue Swimmer Crabs will hang around during winter in the upper reaches of the Spencer Gulf.

Good sized Blueys have been caught at Port Hughes and Wallaroo, with some very large ones caught at Port Augusta.

EYRE PENINSULA

Salmon have been firing along the entire West Coast over the last few weeks, with fish between 3-5kg found at Locks Well, Mt Greenly Beach, Sheringa and Streaky Bays Back Beach.

Talia has also been reliable for big Salmon to well over 5kg over the past few weeks, with fish caught on metal lures and Pilchard bait.

Coffin Bay has plenty of Salmon Trout widespread, with large numbers coming from the Brothers Islands.

King George Whiting were caught in good numbers at Farm Beach before the most recent storm, and should school up in once conditions calm off over the weekend.

Tumby Bay and the Sir Joseph Banks area all fished well last week for Whiting to 40cm, with some other good fish coming from Arno Bay and Whyalla.

Snapper news has been fairly quiet with only a few reports of fish coming from Cowell and Whyalla, with some nice sized fish being caught by clients on a local charter at Whyalla.

Squid have come from Port Lincoln and Tumby Bay, with a few also being found at Pt Neill and Venus Bay.

FLEURIEU PENINSULA

Reports have been quiet from offshore areas, with mostly shore based reports over the past week.

Waitpinga has produced good numbers of Salmon at times with good catches of fish to 2-3kg some days, then smaller Salmon Trout the next day.

Inside the Murray Mouth has plenty of plump Salmon Trout with the odd bigger Salmon taken occasionally.

The Bluff at Victor Harbor has some really nice sized Squid coming from the rocks and from the Jetty. The Yamashita Live Search 490 Glow has been proven very effective there recently.

Rapid bay has produced a few Squid recently, with some nice sized Tommies taken in the late afternoon/evening.

SOUTH EAST

Offshore news has been quiet over the past couple of weeks, with big seas keeping most boats off the water.

Surf anglers have found plenty of Salmon at Beachport, and a few that have braved Salt Creek have caught plenty of Salmon to around 4kg.

The Glenelg River has fished well for Bream and School Mulloway, but the freshwater has shuts things down over the past week.

RIVERLAND - FRESHWATER

Some really large Callop have been coming from most areas along the River Murray, with some good numbers found at Purnong, Walker Flat, Swan Reach, Morgan and Ramko.

Casting small to medium sized deep diving hard bodied lures has been very successful along the cliffs and sunken timber structures.

Bait fishing for Callop with a light running sinker rig, using fresh Worms and Shrimps will also get good results.

Carp can be caught all year round and provide a good fight on light gear.

Try using very small floats and fishing close to the bank with corn or bread as bait, with small amounts of berley pellets to get the Carp to come in and feed.
