FISHING REPORT

This week’s fishing report, brought to you by the team at Tackle World Adelaide Metro.

Thursday -- 5th of July, 2018

METRO

King George Whiting catches have been steady across most of the metro coastline, with best hauls coming from 3-5m in the sand patches.

The Black Pole area and Outer Harbor has plenty of small fish that need to measured, with a few legal fish amongst them. Larger fish were caught at Bower Rd, Grange and West Beach.

Those fishing southern grounds found better sized King George Whiting at Brighton, Marino, Hallett Cove and Moana.

There have been some good reports of Snook at Seacliff and Brighton, with some good catches coming from the rocks at Marino and from the boats fishing shallow water in the same areas.

Metal lures are most effective from shore, with diving minnows working well when cast or trolled from boats or kayaks.

Snapper have been coming from grounds wide of North Haven and also some of the shallow water spots between West Beach and Hallett Cove. Early mornings and dirty water has been the key to getting the fish on the inshore southern grounds.

Salmon have really started to fire up on the southern beaches, with some cracking fish coming from Sellicks and Maslins Beach. Fish to 3kg have been caught on metal lures and bait.

Southport beach and Port Noarlunga Jetty have both fired on afternoon high tides, with schools of Salmon to 1.5kg moving up from the river mouth and up past the jetty.

The Port River has plenty of Salmon Trout from most areas, and some good sized ones at times at St Kilda.

Mulloway have been caught at night in the Onkaparinga River and a few smaller ones landed in the Patawalonga River at Glenelg. A couple larger Mulloway have come from the Port River, with live baits being the best option at night time.

Bream have moved into deeper areas over the cooler months, but can still be caught by using baits or heavier vibes if using lures. Try around the wharves and bridges through the Port where the water is quite deep and the structure is giving the fish some protection.

YORKE PENINSULA

King George Whiting have been found quite easily by most crews across the Yorke Peninsula over the past few weeks. Port Hughes anglers have been doing very well, with most boats returning with quotas fairly quickly. Local anglers will tend to fish from early afternoon until just before darkness for their bag limit of Whiting in the bay at Port Hughes.

Port Victoria has been slightly slower since the weekend, but catches prior suggest that good numbers are around and should fire up again when the weather clears.

Squid have been coming from Wallaroo, Point Riley, Port Hughes, Moonta and Stansbury.

Salmon are being found at most of the usual winter haunts, with Browns Beach firing at times when the schools are coming in close. Some good sized Salmon have come from Berry Bay, with smaller Salmon caught at Cape Elizabeth and Point Riley.

Snapper have come from Wallaroo and Point Riley, with fish around the 60cm mark. Other Snapper catches have been coming from Tapley Shoal and Marion Reef, with bag limits of 38-60cm fish common.

EYRE PENINSULA

King George Whiting have come from Coffin Bay, with the Ledges holding plenty of small fish that will need to be measured. Larger fish have come from Point Longnose and nearby Farm Beach.

Port Lincoln still has a few Squid throughout the Bays and at the Town Jetty. Other squid have come from Tumby Bay and Arno Bay.

Yellowfin Whiting can still be found at Port Lincoln along the foreshore, with some good sized fish also coming from Cowell.

Salmon are firing at most of the beaches in the Port Lincoln National Park, with other good catches coming from Convention Beach and Talia.

Snapper catches have been reported at Arno Bay and Cowell, with most fish between 38-60cm and the odd big one amongst them.

Whyalla has produced some good Snapper over the past few weeks, with a few big ones coming from the Rip.

FLEURIEU PENINSULA

King George Whiting catches have come from those fishing grounds out from Wirrina Cove. Good sized fish have come from 8-10m not too far from the Marina. Other catches came from Lady Bay and near Rapid Head.

Squid have come from Rapid Bay Jetty and Second Valley Jetty, with Wirrina Cove breakwater also producing a few Squid.

Salmon are firing at Waitpinga and Parsons Beach, with anglers casting metal lures having a ball on fish to 3kg. Other areas holding Salmon are Deep Creek and Goolwa Beach.

Mullet are still being caught at Sugars Beach at Goolwa and a few at Parsons Beach and at Blow Hole.

Cape Jervis Jetty has very large Tommies at night time, with Rapid Bay and Screwpile Jetty having smaller fish.

SOUTH EAST

Offshore reports from the South East have been a little quiet, with conditions over the past week or so not ideal for boaties. Those who have ventured out recently from Pt Macdonald have found Southern Bluefin Tuna to 25kg quite easy to find and haven’t had to work too hard for a limit.

The larger barrels are out there, with a few good sized fish fought and lost recently.

Those fishing out of Portland and Port Fairy have managed some good catches of fish to 150kg, with some good fish caught on the Bonze Spreader Bar at Port Fairy.

The Glenelg River has been fishing very well over the past few weeks, with anglers targeting Bream and Estuary Perch doing very well on hardbody lures and soft plastics.

RIVERLAND - FRESHWATER

Murray Cod catches continue to come from those putting in the time to chase these iconic, sometimes illusive specie.

Large deep diving hardbody lures slowly trolled are an effective way to target big Cod, with large Bassman Spinnerbaits a stand out when casting at fish holding on any structure.

Areas that are producing fish have been between Lock 1 and Lock 3, with larger fish coming from Loxton and above Renmark.

Callop can be targeted using the same method, with lures and perhaps line class downscaled a little.

Callop catches have come from Walker Flat, Purnong, Morgan, Cadell and Ramko.
