FISHING REPORT

This week’s fishing report, brought to you by the team at Tackle World Adelaide Metro.

Thursday -- 12th of April, 2018

METRO

What a fantastic run of great weather we have just had, with some pretty good fishing to go along with it.

The summer species have stayed around in good numbers for much longer than usual, while some traditional winter fish have also started to fire up.

Some really nice sized Garfish are being caught locally, with bag limits still being found by anglers fishing from boats and from jetties.

Brighton Jetty and Port Noarlunga Jetty have both seen some good catches, with many fish well into the 30cm plus range.

King George Whiting have come from grounds out from Outer Harbor and straight out from Brighton, with patches of fish also found at West Beach and Moana.

Snapper have been slow along the northern drops, with most of the reports coming from southern grounds out from O’Sullivans Beach and Aldinga.

Squid have been caught in good numbers all along the Metro coast, with crystal clear waters for the past few weeks really helping those fishing inshore grounds. Shimano Sephia Egixile BB squid jags have been doing extremely well.

Best catches have come from Seacliff to Port Stanvac as well as Semaphore to St Kilda.

Big Tommies have been caught at Glenelg Jetty and Brighton Jetty at night, with some nice sized ones also coming into the harbour at O’Sullivans Beach.

Mullet have been found at most beaches, with Sellicks Beach to Christies Beach being the best beaches to head to.

Earlier this week some good schools of Mullet were spotted as far up the Onkaparinga River as the football oval at Old Noarlunga, with some nice sized Mulloway hot on their tails.

Mulloway from 45cm to 85cm have been caught in the middle reaches of the Onkaparinga River recently, with live baits working best at night.

As mentioned before it could well be worth trying further upstream on the good tides.

Salmon Trout have been coming from the beach at Southport and Christies Beach, with some good schools hanging around on dusk. 35g Samaki Torpedo V2 slugs have been working well, try colours like the chrome, pearl white and glow zebra.

YORKE PENINSULA

The warmer waters of the upper Spencer Gulf are ideal for traditional summer species to continue for a few months longer than here in St Vincents Gulf, where Yellowfin Whiting, Garfish and Blue Swimmer Crabs can all be caught well into May and sometimes June.

Garfish have come from Pt Broughton and Fishermans Bay in large numbers, and can still be dabbed on calm nights.

Yellowfin Whiting have come from the sand flats at Pt Broughton and from Pt Pirie. Port Hughes, Moonta and Ardrossan also have Yellowfin but in slightly lower numbers.

King George Whiting have schooled up at Pt Turton and Edithburgh, with some quick bag limits coming from within the Bay at Port Hughes and Moonta. Some larger fish have been caught in deeper water near Cape Elizabeth in the mornings but the late afternoon high tides produce the best results in the Bay during winter.

Snapper catches have been quiet, apart from a few big fish coming from Pt Broughton and Pt Pirie.

Squid are thick at Fishermans Bay and at Pt Vincent, where quick bag limits of big Squid have been common. Other squid catches have come from Wool Bay, Pt Victoria and Pt Riley.

Mullet are set in at most beaches around the bottom of Yorke Peninsula, with some good catches coming from Marion Bay, Pondalowie Bay and Troubridge Point. Other catches have come from Hillocks Drive where groups have done well with good catches of big Mullet, Salmon and Tommies.

Salmon have been caught at Browns Beach and Berry Bay, with night times being productive times to fish. Smaller Salmon from 500g to 1kg have been taking lures at Pt Riley and at Cape Elizabeth.

Tommie Ruffs have been caught at Stenhouse Bay Jetty and a few at night from Marion Bay Jetty.

Offshore of Marion Bay and Pondalowie Bay, anglers have found Samson Fish to have schooled up at a few regular lumps. Nannygai, Swallowtail and School Sharks have also been caught in good numbers at Pondalowie Bay and out from Wedge Island.

EYRE PENINSULA

Some reasonable Snapper have been reported from Whyalla recently and a few fish to 7kg coming from Pt Augusta.

King George Whiting have been caught south of Whyalla, Tumby Bay, Arno Bay and throughout the Bays at Port Lincoln. Bigger fish have come from wide of Farm Beach and at the Sir Joseph Banks Group.

Yellowfin Whiting continue to be caught at Whyalla and at Arno Bay, with some good catches of fish well into the 40cm bracket.

Squid have been easy to find at Whyalla, with other good catches coming from Pt Augusta and Tumby Bay Jetty.

Gunyah Beach, Almonta and Convention Beach have all had schools of Salmon over the past week, with Gunyah being very productive for lure casters.

Garfish have come from Arno Bay and Coffin Bay, where big Mullet continue at the town Jetty on the rising tide.

Southern Bluefin Tuna are still in around offshore of Coffin Bay, with fish from 10kg to 15kg found not far from Point Sir Isaacs, Greenly Island and The Hummocks.

Kingfish are amongst Tuna at the Cabbage patch and will take jigs or soft plastics.

FLEURIEU PENINSULA

Snapper have come from grounds out from Wirrina and some rugger sized fish caught at the Oil Rig. Cape Jervis launchers have found Snapper in the Passage and at Tunkalilla.

Other catches from Cape Jervis include School Sharks, Nannygai, Samson Fish and Kingfish. Dodge tides in this area are productive.

King George Whiting have also been found at Victor Harbor and straight out from Wirrina Cove.

Squid have come from Rapid Bay Jetty and a few at Cape Jervis, where some very large Tommie Ruffs have been caught in the evenings.

Salmon have come from Waitpinga and Bashams Beach, with smaller Salmon Trout coming from Parsons Beach.

Mullet have come from Waitpinga, Parsons Beach, Normanville, Carrickalinga and Sugars Beach. Rising tides and small amounts of berley work well with Mullet Mix as bait.

Bream have come from the Inman River and around The 19 Beacon when freshwater flow is low.

Further down the Coorong has seen Mulloway catches slow down a little, but some good fish to 90cm have been landed by those putting in the time to get good live bait.

SOUTH EAST

The conditions over the past few weeks have allowed plenty of access to the offshore waters, and the fishing has been exceptional.

Southern Bluefin Tuna and Albacore have been found offshore of Port MacDonnell, with a 100kg plus Bluefin already landed with another lost during the battle over the past week.

Portland has seen 100kg plus fish caught as well this week, with plenty of smaller school fish also caught.

Surf fishing has been excellent at Salt Creek over the last few weeks, with some nice Mulloway, Sharks and Salmon coming from 42mile through to Tea Tree Crossing.

RIVERLAND - FRESHWATER

The River Murray has been fishing extremely well recently, with some very good water clarity making lure fishing much easier.

Callop have been found up close to the cliffs early in the day at most locations from as low as Tailem Bend right up to Renmark.

The Lower Murray Lure Fishing Club held an event at Ramko last week with some really good numbers of Callop caught and released to around 50cm.

Murray Cod have been landed over the past few weeks at several locations between Lock 3 and 4, as well as some big fish over the 1metre mark coming from areas much lower downstream.

Trolling big hardbody lures along the cliffs and casting shallower diving lures around the timber structures have been successful methods, with Bassman DT Series and Bassman 4x4s also worth casting amongst the logs.
